What is Dementia?

Dementia is a general term for a decline in cognitive function severe enough to interfere with daily life. It affects memory, thinking, behavior, and the ability to perform everyday activities. Dementia is not a specific disease but rather a collection of symptoms resulting from various underlying brain disorders. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of cases.  The progression of dementia varies depending on the type and the individual. Dementia is generally a progressive condition, meaning symptoms worsen over time. Early diagnosis and intervention can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. With appropriate care and support, individuals with dementia can maintain a level of independence and well-being.  However, as the disease advances, increased levels of care and assistance are usually required.
