Some FAQs related to Therapy & Fees

What happens at the Assessment appointment?

Your first appointment will be an assessment appointment with your therapist. The assessment session will cover:

  • Completing and signing of a ‘counselling contract’.
  • Your reasons for attending therapy
  • Your hopes and aims for therapy
  • Confidentiality
  • Fees and methods of payment
  • Boundaries/cancellations
  • Any questions you may have about therapy

This assessment/first appointment is about making sure we both have all the information we need to work together safely and ethically. Therapy will continue in the weeks ahead, until no longer needed.

Is the first session free?

The first appointment is not free. This is a 50 minute assessment session to get to know new clients and to begin to assess goals and needs.

Is the counselling confidential?

Yes it is. What is discussed within the counselling sessions stays in the counselling sessions. The only circumstance where confidentiality might be broken is if the client poses a serious risk either to him/herself or someone known to the client. I would always try to discuss the need for a break in confidentiality with the client first and the reasons for this.

How much does a therapy session cost?

Prices range from £45 – £70. The fees for each therapist are listed on their professional profiles HERE.
We will match you to a therapist to best suit your needs. Alternatively, if you have a therapist you would prefer to receive treatment from, let us know on your referral form please.

Do you take insurance?

NI Counselling is a private therapy service which ensures full confidentiality. This means you must pay in full for your sessions, if needed we can provide you with receipts which can then be submitted to your insurance company to seek reimbursement from your insurer. We do not guarantee reimbursement and recommend you talk to your insurer about your level of coverage, and the possibility of reimbursement before making an appointment.

How do I pay?

We request you pay for your first assessment session by bank transfer (alternative options can be given upon request). For follow-on sessions, your therapist will let you know their preferred payment method at assessment session.

Is the Therapist with the higher fee better?

This is not an indicator of one therapist being better than the other. It is true that less experienced therapists may charge less, but some therapists choose to keep their fees lower to make therapy more accessible.

Why do Therapists have different fees?

Therapist fees are based on level of qualifications, years in practice and specialist fields. All our therapist are fully qualified practitioners and are accredited with a professional body within their field of work.

Can I pick which Therapist I want?

Yes of course, let us know on your referral form and we will check their availability.

How can therapy help me?

A number of benefits are available from participating in therapy. Therapists can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, self-esteem, unresolved childhood issues, grief, stress management, body image issues and creative blocks. Many people also find that counsellors can be a tremendous asset to managing personal growth and forward planning. The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.

Do I really need therapy? I can usually handle my problems.

Everyone goes through challenging situations in life, and while you may have successfully navigated through other difficulties you’ve faced, there’s nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it. In fact, therapy is for people who have enough self-awareness to realise they need a helping hand, and that is something to be admired.

What is therapy like?

Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. In general, you can expect to discuss the current events happening in your life, your personal history relevant to your issue, and report progress (or any new insights gained) from the previous therapy session. Depending on your specific needs, therapy can be short-term, for a specific issue, or longer-term, to deal with more difficult patterns or your desire for more personal development. Either way, it is most common to schedule regular weekly sessions.

If I start therapy can I just quit any time I want to?

Yes, you are the one buying the counselling service so that makes you the person in charge and therefore you are completely free to quit any time you want!

What if I need to cancel my initial assessment session, after I have made payment?

Cancellations – more than 24 hours notice: If you have confirmed your assessment session by payment and then need to cancel, giving more than 24 hours’ notice (Monday-Friday); we can refund your full fee or reschedule your appointment to best suit.
